Project Description

Type 1 hangar

simple -portal-type01

Type 1 Aircraft hangars are simple “steel portal framed” buildings with a typical clear span up to 30M or so. Ideally suited to light aircraft \ small jet applications, they are quick to build and economical on cost – but flexibility is restricted due to their limited clear span.

Integral workshops, offices and external lean to’s are also design possibilities – tied portal versions of this hangar type can increase their span to around 85m and multi-span or propped portal aircraft hangars can increase to virtually any width.

Doors can be single or multi track, multi leaf, with or without outriggers.

See our Hangar Door Options for further clarification.

For clear span hangers up to 200M wide, Reidsteel patented “Archspan” structures are the way to go.

Even greater clear spans can be achieved using cantilever hangar systems.

Military Aircraft Hangars for Chilean Air Force and Chilean Navy

A 2300m² Hangar designed and manufactured by Reidsteel for the Chilean Air Force. There are two storey offices, workshops and stores on three sides. At the rear, to accommodate the aircraft nose, there is a specially built extension, complete with door to allow exit and entry of tow vehicles.

The complete erection and cladding was done by a local construction company under the supervision of a Reidsteel engineer.

So far we have built three 42 metre span hangars for Chile, two for the Chilean Airforce at Aeropuerto Internacional Arturo Merino Benitez, Santiago, and the other for the Chilean Navy at Base Aeronaval Viña del Mar.

Entry and exit door at the rear for plant and equipment – note nose extension at rear of the hangar:

Surrey Air Ambulance Hangar – Cranleigh, Surrey, UK

This REIDsteel helicopter hangar spans 16m x 16m, and is 6m high at the eaves.

Reidsteel designed, supplied and erected all structural steelwork and cladding, plus the six slab, three track, manually operated, sliding slab hangar doors, which provide a clear entrance 12m wide by 5m high.

The hangar consisted of an insulated double skin cladding system on the roof to help combat condensation forming on the underside and then dripping down on top of the valuable and essential equipment stored inside, with uninsulated single skin cladding on the walls and doors to keep costs to an absolute minimum.

Summit Aviation Hangar – Manston Airport, UK

This complex propped portal Aircraft Hangar (6900 m2) was constructed for Summit Aviation in order for them to carry out helicopter and aircraft engine maintenance.

The main Helicopter Hangar is 52m by 115m and the reception area is 22m by 41m.

The curved roof consists of standard trapezoidal cladding and the waveform roof over the reception area is in colour matched aluminium standing seam.

The wall cladding is a mixture of box profile double skin and microrib profile composite panels in Sargasso Blue and Metallic Silver.

Access doors are by Crawford UK and the Main Contractor was GSE Design and Build. The Architects were the Duncan & Graham Partnership and Engineers were Gary Gabriel Associates.
