Project Description

HELICOPTER HANGAR

Scatsta Airport, Shetland Isles

helicopter-hangar-scatsta-airportTo maintain its new state-of-the-art helicopters servicing North Sea oil platforms, a new permanent REIDsteel helicopter hangar was constructed at Scatsta Airport for Shetland Leasing & Property Company (SLAP ) .

This will enable aircraft to be better maintained and housed overnight and has greatly enhanced the working conditions, allowing maintenance engineers to provide a much improved service.

The hangar is a 2 span propped portal framed building, 80m x 41m, with 7.5m clear height – The manually operated doors are clad in vertically laid composite panels. The rear elevation has a full gable frame to permit future end extension, and the steel is hot dip galvanised.

The REIDsteel hangar door has 12 slabs on 3 tracks, giving an entrance 78m wide by 6m high. The minimum clear opening across the door width is 26m – REIDsteel also supplied and installed system ‘K’ personnel doors, and a single girder overhead crane spanning 14m, with 60m travel.

5% of the roof area is polycarbonate Safespan factory sealed roof lights, to provide natural light within the hangar and permanent all round roof edge protection enables the client to maintain the building safely. The structure resists the howling winds blowing straight off the sea.
